Subject: Doctor Dwight

Hello! Today was fun! He is still communicating very well with the yes/no card. Joe even got him to wave bye and Joe also got him to give us a 'toothy' smile .... 'ALMOST' his smile but not natural ~ yet!! I also asked him for a high five and he gave it to me and then stuck his hand out for a return high five! Dwight, Joe and I were around a table working on some 'homework' the ST and OT gave us and DWIGHT reaches out and taps on Joe's watch .... I guess he wanted to know what time it was .. this is the FIRST "INITIATION" of 'conversation' on his part! Cool, huh?
We went to the zoo and it went VERY well! He seemed to enjoy it. We were at the zoo for two hours .... it was 72* with a slight breeze and very sunny.....perfect zoo day ..... or perfect day to remove a trach!!! YUP .... we were loaded in the van to return to the hospital (thankfully) and the Rec Therapist was securing another patient and I was proceeding to put my camera away and sat down, looked at Dwight, and VOILA! He had unhooked the left side of the velcro collar, tossed it behind his neck and the trach was pulled out resting on his chest!!!! With a rather 'nervous' voice I go , "Ah, Lisa ... I need you NOW!" What's wrong? Umm .. Dwight pulled out his trach .... "hoh dear" ..... So she proceeded to cover it with gauze, put towel around his neck, finished with Louise and off we went to the hospital. She phones ahead and alerted the nurse .... it took us about 30 minutes to get to the hospital and in that short amount of time the Stoma (hole from the trach) was almost completely closed!! With it scheduled to be removed Monday, they just put a secure dressing on it and left it out!!!! Guess he was finished with the trach, huh? It made for a memory for Lisa ... she said she has had worse happen but never a trach pulled!! Needless to say Dwight is MUCH more aware of what is 'attached' to him .... and choosing to remove what doesn't suit him! Seriously, please pray he leave the feeding tube alone. It is the last 'attached' item left!!!! Joe travels back tomorrow . It was GREAT having him on the Zoo adventure! Love to all ... May God find us faithful!! joan for us 4 1 Cor 2:5 " so that 'our' faith not rest on the wisdom of men, BUT on the POWER OF GOD".....
